Candidates and Elections

Did you have fun at Missouri Youth in Government last year? If you are interested in even MORE fun, consider running for elected office at MO YIG! Student officers lead and shape the entire program, meeting throughout the year to build their leadership skills and prepare for their responsibilities for guiding the work of 1000 program participants. Officers make a serious commitment to YIG and to the groups they serve, but have tons of fun in the process! Review the qualifications for each position and consider running for office!

Students are selected for leadership positions in YIG in a number of different ways.   The Executive and Program Officers are elected by their peers.  In some cases, this is by all students at the State Convention.  In other cases, this is by students specifically within a program area.  Some student officers than have the power to appoint other participants for key roles.  Finally, many student leaders are appointed by Program Coordinators through an application process.

The elections for the offices listed below are held during the State Convention in Jefferson City. All Program Officers will preside at the State Convention held the year following their elections and serve on the Program Committee after their election.

The Student Leadership Overview (PDF) outlines the full requirements and duties of all elected and appointed student leadership roles.  Candidates should review this prior to filing for office.

The Elections and Campaigns Overview (PDF) includes important rules and information regarding campaign guidelines and regulations. All candidates must review these guidelines prior to the State Convention and abide by all rules and regulations set forth by Missouri YMCA Youth in Government. Failure to do so may result in removal from the ballot.
