We are pleased to present a new Executive Branch Leadership Institute for 2010. This year, EBLI is combined with YMCA Advocacy Day, and will be April 5-7, 2010.
The format for EBLI is different than past years. EBLI will still provide participants with an in-depth experience in the executive branch of Missouri State Government, but students will not be focused on a policy issue and developing a solution. This year, groups of two or three students will spend one day at a state department. You will have an opportunity to visit with many key staff about the issues facing our state, how the department can address these, and what role youth can have in the process. The departments will use this time to educate you about their functions, take you on tours of interesting facilities, and demonstrate the importance of our state departments in the functions of state government. If you have particular career interest related to state government, we will try to have you spend time with a professional in that career. This is an excellent opportunity to interact with some outstanding people and develop contacts that can serve you well for many years to come. In the past, EBLI participants have developed contacts that have led to internships and jobs with state departments.
Students will also participate in YMCA Advocacy Day at the State Capitol. Students will be partnered with YMCA staff and volunteers from across the state to meet with state legislators. Students will have an opportunity to advocate for the YMCA, and share with these legislators their experiences in Youth In Government and the importance of having young people involved in our government processes. After their meetings, students will spend a short amount of time sharing their experiences and creating an action plan to follow up with their legislators after they return home.
Also, students will take a tour of the historic Missouri State Penitentiary. Students can learn about this important part of Missouri history while it is still open and available to the public.
Participation is limited to 30 students. Applications are due by March 1st to the YIG State Office. More information, including a sample schedule, cost, and application can be found on the website by using the menu to the left.
